I usually tell people that fencing is a sport with no self defense applications in the real world, but it turns out I was wrong: Sword fight ensues after S.C. break-in: "Sword fight ensues after S.C. break-in"
We need some details here. Was it a samari sword, a broad sword, a claymore?
In addition, was the roommate more than a collector? Did he luck out and get the first blow in, or did he wait for it for, skillfully parry, and then drive home the point for first blood. Did the ex-boy friend come to a sword fight with a dull sword? I want to know more.
Editors must not be as good as they use this story cries out for a rewrite and more detail.
